Tip of the month

COMPANY DOWNSIZING? HAVE A RESUME IN HAND!

If your company is downsizing and your future with the firm unclear, it is always best to have your resume ready to pursue another job. At the very least, being prepared in this fashion provides you with a sense of empowerment from having done something concrete to improve your chances of business success. It is also good to remember that your present employer can better justify your retention using the accomplishments on a recently updated resume!!!

RELOCATING? A GOOD COVER LETTER CAN HELP YOUR MOVE

Someone who is relocating to another region naturally updates a resume to offer potential new employers. But is a cover letter truly necessary? To answer this question, put yourself in the new employer's shoes -- would you like an overview of the person's career and goals in addition to a fact sheet on the past? I think most people would answer this in the affirmative.

GRAMMAR TIP:

In most English prose, especially in Formal or Standard English as is used in a resume cover letter, it is not grammatical to begin sentences with the word "I." Nearly all "home made" cover letters I have seen have 80% to 90% of the sentences beginning with "I" -- this is an unacceptable level of illiteracy. If you are in doubt as to what constitutes proper grammar, proper sentence structure, and proper paragraph construction, pay a professional to write you a good cover letter.
